Plan before the flock leaves
Agree on the sequence, responsibilities, downtime and equipment needed before depletion. Review the outgoing flock’s health, treatment and laboratory history with the veterinarian. If a notifiable disease is suspected, follow official instructions before moving birds, litter or equipment; a routine turnaround plan may not be appropriate.
Remove organic material first
Clear feed, litter and debris using the farm’s safe handling and disposal plan. Dismantle or lift equipment where practical, and pay attention to corners, fan housings, inlets, drains and service areas. Dry cleaning removes material that can shield pathogens and reduce the effectiveness of subsequent disinfection.
Wash, disinfect and allow time
Wash surfaces and equipment thoroughly with an appropriate detergent, rinse where required and let the house dry. Apply a disinfectant suited to the target organisms and surfaces, following the label for dilution, coverage, contact time and worker protection. Clean and treat the water system using a separate, compatible procedure; flush it before birds arrive.
Verify and protect the clean house
Inspect difficult areas and repair leaks, damaged surfaces and pest entry points. Where appropriate, use environmental sampling as part of the farm’s verification plan. Restrict access to the cleaned house, use dedicated footwear and equipment, and record what was done. A clean house can be recontaminated by people, vehicles, pests or untreated equipment before placement.
